ISLAND OF LOST SOULS & THE ISLAND OF DR MOREAU

CLASSIC H. G WELLS DOUBLE BILL

This week it’s all about compare and contrast with the adaptation of H. G Wells THE ISLAND OF DR MOREAU. First up is ISLAND OF LOST SOULS by Eric Kenton, this was the first of many adaptations of ‘ The Island of Dr Moreau’ from 1932, ahead of its time it looked at eugenics and man’s constant need recreate nature in his own image. With an irreverent scene chewing performance from Charles Laughton and the dark and brooding cinematography of Karl Struss. Followed by the 1977 adaptation of the same name Don Taylor’s THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU with Burt Lancaster replacing Charles Laughton as the sinister Dr Moreau with its high camp and questionable prosthetics this version attempts to look more closely at genetic engineering but do bare in mind this is 70’s cult horror so you will be hit over the head with signposts. With the usual free popcorn and rum.
