PAST PROMOS FROM CULTIVATE FILM CLUB

Sunday the 3RD CULTIVATE FILM CLUB was all about Art house horror. With DRILLER KILLER and THE HITCHER

Driller Killer Abel Ferrara's low budget independent first feature, in which he cast himself along side a cast of unknowns. In the true spirit of art house cinema he also produced and directed it, setting up Navaron Films company (1977-78). Shooting on 16 mm film and utilized his Union Square apartment and adjacent streets as locations. It features many of the elements which became trademarks of Ferrara's later films (Bad Lieutenant and Kings Of New York) . His creative signature would include Catholic iconography, gritty urban locations atmospheric night shots, and eclectic soundtracks combining punk with Bach, incorporating choreographed scenes of extreme violence. His constant theme of religion and redemption, salvation and damnation which still hangs heavy in his more recent work, are more than put to good use in Driller Killer. Using the punk bands of the period to reflect contemporary New York this is not just a horror movie this is art house horror, listen out for the New York Dolls and Television.

SUNDAY 24TH MARCH FROM 7PM BOILING POINT AND SHOGUN ASSASSIN VHS FUZZY  SPECIAL

THIS SUNDAY AT CULTIVATE BOILING POINT AND SHOGUN ASSASSIN. This see the film project SHOGUN ASSASSIN directed by Robert Houston and his writing partner David Weisman, a protégé of Andy Warhol who also directed Ciao! Manhattan (1972). A fan of the original Kozure Ōkami series of films, Weisman went on to obtained the rights to produce the Japanese-American project. Distributed by Cult film director Roger Corman's New World Pictures within the grindhouse movie circuit. Shogun Assassin's extreme violence caused it to be banned for nearly 20 years after its release the cut version finally got released on DVD in 2003 which is why I have lovingly restored the original uncut VHS copy, all 28 years of this actual tape which we will be shown in all it's fuzzy, scratchy, grindhouse glory. Along side the equally relentless Boiling Point.  With the usual free popcorn and Rum at Joshua Brooks.

This spellbinding lyrical master piece starring Denis Lavant (Holy Motors) is a must see.

CULTIVATE FILM CLUB EVERY SUNDAY AT JOSHUA BROOKS.

I still am an artist based in Manchester England with a keen interest in film, an interest that has somewhat consumed my life, so to feed my cravings I run a weekly film club called CULTIVATE. By putting together this blog I am hoping to collaborate with other film societies and film communities from across the world or even just across the water, I am also working on a project to develop the pop-up film culture in print and on film looking at the links between film and art. I will be producing an online magazine, some of which will appear in this blog  the full version will be on COMIXOLOGY, I will also be putting together a 500 print run so if you love film follow me on Facebook at CULTIVATE FILM ART or on Twitter at CULTIVATEFILM .

At present my pop-up cinema is housed at JOSHUA BROOKS so if you want to come down for films and rum get down every Sunday from 7PM.
