This week due too the Easter listings we have a single billing but what a single billing it is. The ultimate sound anoraks film Francis Ford Coppola's 'THE CONVERSATION,' taking eavesdropping and turning it into art, listed as one of most iconic sound tracks in cinematic history Copploa takes the suspense thriller genre and turns it into an experiment in sound married with that trademark washed out seventies look and blasted out through a VOID super enhanced sound system practitioners this is one for film fans, experimental sound practitioners  and filmmakers a like. With the usual free popcorn and rum

THE SEVENTH CONTINENT ABND CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS

TWISTED FAMILY PORTRAIT DOUBLE BILL 

This week it's twisted family portraits, we start off with Haneke's debut feature. Based on a true story THE SEVENTH CONTINENT draws a disturbing portrait of a family heading towards a breakdown with shocking consequences. Followed by the award winning CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS. The Friedmans were a respectable middle-class family who's lives were turned upside down by the horrifying revelations that were to rock middle America, this emotionally explosive, thought-provoking, captivating, multi-award winning documentary. Essential viewing.

SCUM AND THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY

 BEST OF BRITISH DOUBLE BILL 



This week sees the first of this year’s best of British double bills with two cult British classics. First up is from Alan Clarke’s 1979 iconic borstal drama SCUM, this brutal portrayal of youth incarceration starring unknown actors Ray Winston and Phil Daniels was subsequently banned on its release for it’s hyper realistic and uncensored portrayal of prison life. Next up is the John Mackenzie classic look at the London underworld from 1980; LONG GOOD FRIDAY the original British gangster movie that has never been replicated for is sharp incisive take on the gangster thriller genera.

OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON AND I AM GORGON

THE ORIGINALS DOUBLE BILL 

This week an originals special as promised we will be looking at two iconic labels that changed the way we make music and the cultures that sprung up from them. First up is STONES THROW with OUR' VINYL WEIGHS A TON which looks at the legendary label from its  inception to the present day. Being one of the few record labels that's never diverted from it creative ethos holding true to its musical and creative origins it gave the artist within Stones Throw the time and the space to develop their own identity and pretty much full creative control over their out put from 'J. DILLA' to 'TYLER, THE CREATOR' the hip-hop royalty are rolled out to pay tribute to this great label, this intensely moving and emotional documentary will change the way you see hip-hop. Next up is one for the reggae fans; the story of the larger than life legendary producer BUNNY 'STRIKER' this film will take you on a journey through politics, gangs, gun's and music, from dancehall to concert hall with the likes of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Horace Andy, Dillinger, BB Seaton, U. Roy and many more. This film will have you laughing, crying and dancing all within moments of each other.

MAMA AFRICA AND THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN

FEMINIST DOUBLE BILL


This week Cultivate has teamed up with LADY FEST, to bring you a Women's Week special first up is MAMA AFRICA the seminal documentary about one of South Africa's greatest living women MIRIAM MAKEBA, the first black South African artist to achieve world wide acclaim. Singing for the likes of J.F Kennedy she used her statues to publicize the apartheid in South Africa and became a very vocal campaigner against apartheid. A stance that was to eventually force her into a life of exile from her homeland. Next up from Germany is Fassbinder's THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, a look at the post-war experience from a feminist viewpoint. This film cleverly manipulates the viewer while giving you the heartbreaking study of a women picking up the pieces of her own life as Germany digs its self out of the ruins of the second world war an inspiring masterpiece by one of Germanys greatest filmmakers. With vegan food and rum

LES MAITRES DU TEMPS AND A TOWN CALLED PANIC

FRENCH ANIMATION DOUBLE BILL 

This weeks it''s a French animation special, first up is the timeless French classic LES MAITRES DU TEMPS. Rene Laloux's marriage of design and imagination and the creation of a surrealist journey based loosely on Michael Powell's 1940 film THE THIEF OF BAGDAD this masterfully animated metaphysical rescue mission will leave you swimming through a waking dream it takes surrealist film to another level. Next up A TOWN CALLED PANIC from animators Aubier and Vincent based on their shorts of the same name, ATCP is a hilarious and surreal romp through a village called panic to a parallel underwater world a must see double bill to start your week on a high, with the usual free popcorn and rum.
