MAMA AFRICA AND THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN

FEMINIST DOUBLE BILL

This week Cultivate has teamed up with LADY FEST, to bring you a Women's Week special first up is MAMA AFRICA the seminal documentary about one of South Africa's greatest living women MIRIAM MAKEBA, the first black South African artist to achieve world wide acclaim. Singing for the likes of J.F Kennedy she used her statues to publicize the apartheid in South Africa and became a very vocal campaigner against apartheid. A stance that was to eventually force her into a life of exile from her homeland. Next up from Germany is Fassbinder's THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, a look at the post-war experience from a feminist viewpoint. This film cleverly manipulates the viewer while giving you the heartbreaking study of a women picking up the pieces of her own life as Germany digs its self out of the ruins of the second world war an inspiring masterpiece by one of Germanys greatest filmmakers.
