TAKASHI DOUBLE BILL

MIIKE TAKASHI DOUBLE BILL

GOZU AND VISITOR Q

This Sunday at CULTIVATE is the MIIKE TAKASHI double bill with GOZU and VISITOR Q, his vicious theatricality, dark humor and audacious narratives that usually revolved around the Yakuza and unconventional ideas of what constitutes family and the roles of man and the woman in this micro society . His other preoccupation  is human sexuality and the questioning of both our and the characters emotional intelligence. From the man behind AUDITION and ICHI THE KILLER this is a 'must see' not just for horror fans but for film fans.

DOWN BY LAW and THE AMERICAN FRIEND double bill.

Wim Wenders makes his debut at CULTIVATE with THE AMERICAN FRIEND, starring the enigmatic Bruno Ganz. This superbly photographed homage to the B-movies of the 50’s crafted in the Film Noir tradition. This elaborate vision of Patricia Highsmith’s RIPLEY’S GAME turns her text into a gripping European noir which owes most of its look to the cinematography of Robby Muller who is also responsible for the cinematography of our next offering DOWN BY LAW Jim Jarmusch’s third film and possibly his most memorable show him perfecting his signature stark black and white visual style, married with the standout performances from Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni this lyrical deadpan masterpiece grabs a hold of you and draws you in to the final credits. An indie classic that without a doubt is the epitome of cool.

STRAY DOG

STRAY DOG AND NAKED CITY

This weeks double bill is a film noir special with two classics from the genre, first up is STRAY DOG Kurosawa’s masterful police thriller set in occupied Tokyo. This clever piece of filmmaking frames the period beautifully while still maintaining the hot sweaty atmosphere of the Tokyo underworld. Second up is Jules Dassin’s NAKED CITY considered the template for pretty all future noir films. Directed by master noir craftsman Jules Dassin it is shot entirely on location in New York in a semi-documentary style, it turns the city into the star a thing of pure beauty a filmmaking master class.
