DOWN BY LAW and THE AMERICAN FRIEND double bill.
Wim Wenders makes his debut at CULTIVATE with THE AMERICAN
FRIEND, starring the enigmatic Bruno Ganz. This superbly photographed homage to the
B-movies of the 50’s crafted in the Film Noir tradition. This elaborate vision
of Patricia Highsmith’s RIPLEY’S GAME turns her text into a gripping European
noir which owes most of its look to the cinematography of Robby Muller who is
also responsible for the cinematography of our next offering DOWN BY LAW Jim
Jarmusch’s third film and possibly his most memorable show him perfecting his signature
stark black and white visual style, married with the standout performances from Tom Waits and
Roberto Benigni this lyrical deadpan masterpiece grabs a hold of you and draws you in to the final credits. An indie classic that without a doubt is the epitome
of cool.
